How to Melt & Incorporate

Beeswax requires more heat to melt than most botanical butters. Use controlled heat and avoid exposing delicate oils or essential oils to unnecessarily high temperatures.

Measure by Weight

Weigh the Beeswax, carrier oils, butters, and all remaining ingredients for consistent, repeatable results.

Step 02

Melt with the Oil Phase

Place the Beeswax and heat-stable oil-phase ingredients in a double boiler or controlled water bath and heat until fully melted.

Step 03

Cool Before Adding Delicate Ingredients

Remove from heat, allow the blend to cool appropriately, then add essential oils, antioxidants, and other heat-sensitive ingredients.

For DIY Makers & Formulators

Starting ranges are 5–12% for soft balms, 12–20% for medium-firm balms, 10–25% for lip balms, 15–30% for lotion or massage bars, 8–20% for beard balms, and 20–40% for mustache waxes or firm pomades. Melt in the oil phase and pair with liquid oils or butters to adjust glide and richness. Beeswax provides structure; it is not an emulsifier or preservative for water-containing products.

Texture & Climate Considerations

The firmness of a Beeswax formulation changes with temperature. A balm that feels ideal in a cool room may soften considerably during summer or feel firmer during winter.

For a Softer Formula

Reduce the Beeswax percentage
Increase the liquid-oil phase
Add a softer butter such as Shea Butter
Use oils with lighter, more fluid textures
Package in a jar rather than a push-up tube

For a Firmer Formula

Increase Beeswax gradually
Add a firmer butter such as Cocoa Butter
Reduce the liquid-oil phase
Test the formula at warm room temperature
Allow at least 24 hours before final evaluation

Beeswax is produced by honeybees and is therefore not considered a vegan ingredient.
