Start with the fundamentals

Blending is both art and observation

Every essential oil has a distinctive aromatic character. Some make a bright first impression; others create a floral, herbal, or spicy heart; still others add depth and longevity. Thoughtful blending considers how these aromas unfold together—not just how they smell individually.

There is no single perfect formula. Start small, record what you make, and give yourself time to experience the aroma as it develops.

Understanding aroma notes

Top, middle & base notes

01 · Top notes

The first impression

Often bright, fresh, and immediately noticeable. Examples include Sweet Orange, Mandarin, and Bergamot.

02 · Middle notes

The aromatic heart

These help shape the character of a blend. Examples include Lavender, Geranium, and Coriander Seed.

03 · Base notes

Depth & grounding

Often richer, woodier, or more persistent. Examples include Cedarwood Atlas, Patchouli, and Frankincense Carterii.

Note classifications are helpful guides, not fixed scientific categories. An oil's behavior can vary with its composition and the other materials in the blend.

Your first blending exercise

Try a simple three-oil aroma study

Before making a product, explore a small blend on an aroma strip. This lets you evaluate the scent without committing to a larger batch.

Bright Botanical · Aromatic study
  • 3 drops Sweet Orange essential oil
  • 2 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop Cedarwood Atlas essential oil

Method: Add the drops to a clean glass blending vessel, swirl gently, and evaluate the aroma using a scent strip. Record your impressions immediately, after 15 minutes, and later in the day. Adjust one component at a time in your next trial.

This is an aromatic evaluation concentrate, not a ready-to-use topical, bath, or spray formula. Do not apply the undiluted mixture to skin.

Essential oil safety matters

  • Dilution: Assess each oil's dermal restrictions and calculate appropriate topical dilution.
  • Phototoxicity: Some expressed citrus oils, including certain Bergamot oils, require special care in leave-on products.
  • Individual considerations: Age, pregnancy, health conditions, medications, and allergies may affect appropriate use.
  • Children & pets: Store oils securely, diffuse with ventilation, and allow animals to leave.
  • Storage: Close bottles tightly, protect from heat and light, and label blends.
Safety reminder: Do not ingest essential oils or apply undiluted blends to skin. Water alone does not safely dilute essential oils. This educational guide does not replace an ingredient-specific safety assessment.
