Fresh Citrus Botanical Room Spray
Take your DIY blending skills beyond simple essential oil recipes with this Fresh Citrus Botanical Room Spray. Bergamot, Sweet Orange, and Lemon create a bright, juicy citrus aroma designed to freshen the aromatic atmosphere of kitchens, entryways, bathrooms, workspaces, and other living areas.
Unlike a simple "essential oils + water" spray, this advanced formulation introduces three important formulation concepts: solubilization, preservation, and pH evaluation. Essential oils do not dissolve in water, and water-based formulations require appropriate microbial protection when they are prepared for storage and repeated use.
If you're ready to move from basic DIY blending into more precise small-batch formulation, this is an excellent project for developing those skills.
Recipe at a Glance

- Format Water-based aromatic room spray
- Essential Oil Concentration Approximately 0.66%
- Aroma Bright, juicy, fresh citrus
- Method Formulated by weight
Before You Begin
This recipe is different from many beginner DIY projects. You will be working with percentages, a solubilizer, a broad-spectrum preservative, and the pH of the finished formulation.
Use a digital scale capable of measuring to at least 0.01 g for the small ingredients. Do not substitute teaspoons or essential-oil drop counts for the gram measurements in the formulation table.
Always review the current technical documentation supplied with your raw materials before formulating. Supplier specifications can change, and ingredients sold under similar names are not necessarily interchangeable.
60 g Test Formula
| Ingredient | % | 60 g Batch |
|---|---|---|
| Distilled Water | q.s. to 100% | q.s. to 60 g |
| Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside Natural Solubilizer | 5.00% | 3.00 g |
| Bergamot Essential Oil | 0.30% | 0.18 g |
| Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil | 0.20% | 0.12 g |
| Lemon Essential Oil | 0.16% | 0.10 g |
| Liquid Germall Plus | 0.50% | 0.30 g |
Total essential oils: approximately 0.66% / 0.40 g
Important: Distilled water is added last as needed to bring the entire finished batch to exactly 60 g.

Directions
- Clean and sanitize your work surface, formulation vessels, utensils, and packaging. Allow your equipment to dry completely.
- Place your first formulation vessel on the digital scale and tare the scale.
- Weigh 0.18 g Bergamot Essential Oil, 0.12 g Sweet Orange Essential Oil, and 0.10 g Lemon Essential Oil into the vessel.
- Add 3.00 g Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside to the essential-oil blend.
- Stir slowly and thoroughly until the essential oils are uniformly incorporated into the solubilizer. Avoid vigorous stirring because Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside can produce significant foam.
- In a second formulation vessel, weigh approximately 50 g distilled water. Reserve the remaining water for adjusting the final batch weight.
- Slowly introduce the solubilized essential-oil mixture into the distilled water while stirring gently.
- Continue stirring slowly until the formulation appears uniform. Avoid whipping or shaking the mixture.
- Once the formulation is within the processing temperature specified by the preservative supplier, weigh and add 0.30 g Liquid Germall Plus.
- Stir thoroughly but gently to distribute the preservative.
- Check and record the pH of the finished formulation.
- Confirm that the measured pH is compatible with the current specifications for your preservative and other formulation ingredients.
- If pH adjustment is necessary, use an appropriate cosmetic formulation method and recheck the pH after each small adjustment. Do not guess or add household acids directly to the finished formulation.
- Place the formulation back on the scale and add distilled water until the total batch weight reaches exactly 60.00 g.
- Transfer the finished formulation into a clean Clear PET Fine Mist Spray Bottle and secure the sprayer.
- Label the bottle with the recipe name, batch date, and any formulation notes you want to retain.
Formulation Lesson: Essential Oils + Water Don't Mix
One of the most important concepts in water-based aromatherapy formulation is that essential oils are hydrophobic. They do not simply dissolve when added to distilled water.
Shaking an essential oil and water mixture may temporarily break the oil into small droplets, but the ingredients will separate again.
That's why this formulation includes Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside.
It functions as the solubilizing ingredient that helps incorporate the relatively small essential-oil phase into the aqueous formulation.
Why 5% Natural Solubilizer?
The Pure Intox Natural Solubilizer used for this recipe has the INCI Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside. Its supplier identifies it as a nonionic surfactant suitable for use in the aqueous phase and permits use at levels up to 40% of a formulation.
The 5% concentration in this recipe is being used as a starting test concentration for approximately 0.66% essential oils. It creates a solubilizer-to-essential-oil ratio of roughly 7.5:1.
That does not mean 7.5:1 is a universal ratio for Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside. Different essential oils and raw materials can behave differently.
Evaluate your finished test batch for separation, excessive cloudiness, sediment, or other instability before deciding whether the formulation performs as desired.
Solubilization Is Not Preservation
A solubilizer and a preservative perform completely different jobs.
Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside helps incorporate the essential oils into the water-based formulation. It should not be assumed to provide the broad-spectrum preservation needed for a stored water-based product.
This formulation therefore includes Liquid Germall Plus as the broad-spectrum preservative.
Follow the current technical documentation supplied with your preservative, including its permitted usage rate, processing temperature, and compatible pH range.
Why Check the pH?
pH matters in water-based formulation because ingredient performance and preservative efficacy can depend on the environment of the finished product.
The supplier information for the Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside used in this Pure Intox recipe reports an alkaline pH for a 10% aqueous solution. That makes checking the finished formulation particularly important rather than assuming its final pH.
Measure first. Adjust only if necessary and only using an appropriate cosmetic formulation procedure.
Why These Essential Oils?
Aroma Profile
Bright citrus · juicy · fresh · crisp · lightly floral
How to Use
Mist lightly into the air to add a fresh citrus aroma to your space. Use in well-ventilated areas and avoid spraying directly toward people or animals.
This recipe creates an aromatic room spray. It is not a disinfectant, sanitizer, antimicrobial product, or surface cleaner.
Storage + Small-Batch Formulation
Store the finished spray tightly closed in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
A preservative does not replace good formulation and sanitation practices. DIY formulations prepared at home have not necessarily undergone professional microbial challenge or stability testing.
For that reason, this recipe is intentionally designed as a small 60 g test batch. Do not assign a commercial shelf life to the formulation based solely on the presence of a preservative.
Discard the formulation if you notice unexpected changes in odor, color, appearance, separation, or consistency.
Safety & Use Notes
