DIY Botanical Solid Perfume

Create a portable botanical perfume with beeswax, jojoba and fractionated coconut oil. Unlike a traditional alcohol perfume, a solid perfume wears close to the skin and releases its aroma gradually as it warms.

Below are two Pure Intox perfume accords to explore: Golden Veil, a warm citrus-floral-wood composition, and Mandarin Coriander, a bright, softly spiced botanical fragrance.

THE FOUNDATION

30 g Solid Perfume Base

Ingredient % 30 g Batch
Organic Jojoba Oil 50% 15.0 g
Fractionated Coconut Oil 28% 8.4 g
Beeswax 15% 4.5 g
Essential Oil Perfume Accord 7% 2.1 g
Total 100% 30.0 g

Pour your finished perfume into a 60 mL Black Aluminum Tin.

Formulator's Note: The 7% aromatic concentration is a development starting point. Always evaluate the dermal maximum of the finished essential-oil accord before finalizing a leave-on perfume formula.

PERFUME ACCORD 01

Golden Veil

Warm citrus opens into a softly floral heart before settling into frankincense, cedarwood and patchouli. Golden Veil is elegant, grounded and quietly sensual.

Essential Oil Role Accord %
Organic Sweet Orange Top 30%
Bergamot Top 5%
Geranium Heart 20%
Frankincense Carterii Heart / Base 20%
Organic Cedarwood Atlas Base 20%
Patchouli Base 5%
Important: Pure Intox Bergamot is not FCF. Expressed Bergamot can be phototoxic in leave-on products. The amount used in the finished product must remain within the appropriate dermal/phototoxicity limit. Avoid UV exposure to the application area when appropriate.

PERFUME ACCORD 02

Mandarin Coriander

Juicy mandarin leads this more unusual botanical perfume. Coriander adds a softly spicy, aromatic character while geranium bridges the citrus opening to a smooth frankincense and cedarwood foundation.

Essential Oil Role Accord %
Mandarin Top 35%
Coriander Seed Top / Heart 15%
Geranium Heart 15%
Frankincense Carterii Heart / Base 20%
Organic Cedarwood Atlas Base 15%

METHOD

Make Your Solid Perfume

  1. Before making the perfume, combine the essential oils for your chosen accord in a small amber glass bottle.
  2. Allow the accord to rest for at least 24–48 hours before evaluating the aroma. For fragrance development, evaluate again after several days.
  3. Weigh the jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and beeswax into a heat-safe vessel.
  4. Gently heat using a water bath until the beeswax is completely melted.
  5. Remove the vessel from the heat and stir gently.
  6. As the mixture begins to cool but remains fully liquid, add 2.1 g of your chosen essential-oil accord.
  7. Stir thoroughly to distribute the aromatic concentrate.
  8. Pour into a clean, dry 60 mL Black Aluminum Tin.
  9. Leave undisturbed until completely cool and firm before applying the lid.

HOW TO USE

Wear It Close

Glide a clean fingertip lightly across the surface of the perfume and apply a small amount to pulse points such as the wrists. Solid botanical perfumes generally wear closer to the body than alcohol-based fragrances and can be reapplied as desired.

FORMULATOR'S LAB

Make It Your Own

Brighter

Explore a larger proportion of citrus top notes such as Mandarin or Sweet Orange.

More Floral

Increase the presence of Geranium to bring the floral heart forward.

More Grounded

Experiment with Cedarwood Atlas, Frankincense Carterii or Patchouli.

Softer Texture

During formulation trials, small adjustments to the beeswax-to-liquid-oil ratio can produce a softer or firmer finished balm.

Safety

For external use only. Patch test before use. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Essential oils are highly concentrated botanical materials; appropriate dermal limits should be considered when modifying the aromatic formula. Citrus essential oils may require additional phototoxicity considerations depending on the oil and method of extraction.

SOLID PERFUME FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is solid perfume?

Solid perfume is a wax-and-oil-based fragrance that is applied directly to the skin rather than sprayed. Beeswax gives the perfume structure while liquid botanical oils help it glide across the skin and carry the aromatic ingredients.

Why use jojoba oil in solid perfume?

Jojoba has a light, elegant skin feel and excellent oxidative stability, making it especially useful as a base for botanical perfume formulations.

What does beeswax do in solid perfume?

Beeswax transforms the liquid oils into a portable balm and helps control how the perfume spreads across the skin.

How strong is this solid perfume?

This recipe uses a 7% essential-oil perfume accord as a formulation starting point. The appropriate concentration ultimately depends on the essential oils selected and their individual dermal limits.

Can I create my own essential oil blend?

Yes. Part of botanical perfumery is experimenting with top, heart and base notes to create your own aromatic signature. Always evaluate the dermal limits of the complete blend before using it in a leave-on product.

Why should the perfume accord rest before I use it?

Giving the essential oils time to rest together makes it easier to evaluate the fragrance as a complete composition rather than as individual oils. Smell the accord when freshly blended and again after 24–48 hours and several days.
