Customized Botanical Body Lotion

Creating personalized botanical body care doesn't always require building an emulsion from scratch. Pure Intox Unscented Lotion Base provides a professionally formulated starting point that can be used as-is or carefully customized with a small amount of essential oil.

In this beginner recipe, you'll make a 100 g test batch using 99.5% Unscented Lotion Base and just 0.5% essential oil. Choose from three aromatic directions: Soft Lavender, Bright Citrus, or Grounded Woods.

More importantly, you'll learn one of the most useful principles in cosmetic formulation: more ingredients do not necessarily make a better formula. A finished lotion is already a carefully balanced emulsion, so customization should be intentional and restrained.

  3. Weigh 99.5 g Unscented Lotion Base into the vessel.
  4. In a separate small weighing dish, weigh the essential oils for your selected aromatic variation. The combined essential oils should weigh 0.50 g.
  5. Add the essential oil blend to the lotion base.
  6. Using a clean silicone spatula, fold and stir the lotion slowly and thoroughly until the aromatic blend is evenly distributed.
  7. Avoid vigorous whipping, which can incorporate unnecessary air into the finished lotion.
  8. Examine the lotion for uniform texture and appearance.
  9. Transfer the customized lotion into a clean container and close securely.
  10. Label with the aromatic variation and preparation date.

How to Use

Massage a small amount over clean skin as needed. For a particularly enjoyable body-care ritual, apply after bathing or showering while the skin retains a little surface moisture.

Formulation Lesson: Respect the Base

A lotion is an emulsion: a carefully constructed system that keeps water and oil-based ingredients uniformly combined. Pure Intox Unscented Lotion Base has already been formulated with its moisturizing ingredients, emulsification system, and preservation system.

Emulsion Balance Adding substantial amounts of additional oils or water-based ingredients can alter the balance of an already finished emulsion.
Preservation Adding water, hydrosols, aloe, extracts, or other materials can affect the conditions under which the original preservation system was designed to work.
Controlled Customization This beginner recipe deliberately limits the essential oil addition to 0.5% so the modification remains small and easy to reproduce.

Changes to a finished base can affect viscosity, emulsion stability, pH, sensory characteristics, and preservation. For that reason, resist the temptation to treat a finished lotion base as an unlimited blank canvas.

Formulator's Tip: Make a Test Batch First

Even when working with a finished base, make a small test batch before customizing an entire container.

Record the exact ingredients and weights used. Evaluate aroma, texture, appearance, skin feel, and consistency immediately after mixing and again after the lotion has rested.

If you want a stronger aroma, don't automatically add more essential oil. First evaluate whether the existing concentration provides a pleasant experience after the lotion has rested and the aroma has fully integrated.

Try a Side-by-Side Aroma Study

Divide a larger amount of Unscented Lotion Base into three separate 100 g test batches and prepare one of each aromatic variation.

Compare how the same lotion base changes when paired with floral-herbal, citrus, and resinous aromatic profiles. This is an easy way to practice sensory evaluation without changing the underlying cosmetic base.

Storage

Store the customized lotion tightly closed in a cool, dry location away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.

Use clean, dry hands or an appropriate dispensing container to minimize unnecessary contamination during use.

Customization changes the original finished product. Do not assume that the manufacturer's original stability or shelf-life information automatically applies to a modified formulation. Discontinue use if you observe an unexpected change in odor, color, texture, appearance, or product integrity.
