What Is Jojoba?
Jojoba is obtained from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a perennial shrub native to arid regions of North America. The seeds contain a substantial amount of liquid wax that is extracted for cosmetic, personal-care, and industrial applications.
Despite the familiar name “jojoba oil,” its chemistry differs from most vegetable oils. Conventional botanical oils such as sweet almond, grapeseed, and rosehip are composed primarily of triglycerides. Jojoba, by contrast, consists predominantly of wax esters formed from long-chain fatty acids and long-chain fatty alcohols.
This unusual composition is one reason jojoba behaves differently from many conventional carrier oils in a formulation.
Why Jojoba Is Considered a Liquid Wax
Wax esters are formed when a fatty acid is esterified with a fatty alcohol. In jojoba, these molecules contain predominantly long, monounsaturated carbon chains.
Published analyses describe jojoba as consisting almost entirely of wax material, with wax esters representing its major component. Only small quantities of other constituents are present.

Blending With Other Botanical Oils
Jojoba blends readily with other oil-soluble lipids, allowing formulators to adjust the sensory and functional profile of the finished product.

Water-Based Formulations
Jojoba is not water-soluble. Simply adding it to water, hydrosol, or another aqueous ingredient will not create a stable formulation.
Products containing both water and jojoba require an appropriate formulation system—such as emulsification—and water-containing products generally require an appropriate preservation strategy.

Although jojoba is comparatively oxidation-resistant, good ingredient handling remains important.

Is jojoba really an oil?
Jojoba is commonly called jojoba oil, but chemically it is more accurately described as a liquid wax because it consists predominantly of long-chain wax esters rather than triglycerides.
Is jojoba the same as human sebum?
No. Jojoba and human sebum are not chemically identical. Human sebum is a complex mixture containing several classes of lipids. Jojoba does contain wax esters, and wax esters are also components of human sebum, but that does not make the two substances equivalent.
Is jojoba non-comedogenic?
“Non-comedogenic” should not be treated as an absolute property of a single raw material. Whether a finished product works well for acne-prone or congestion-prone skin depends on the complete formulation, concentration, application amount, and the individual using it.
Can jojoba be used directly on the skin?
Cosmetic-grade jojoba is used both as an ingredient in finished formulations and as a simple oil-phase skin-conditioning material. Individual tolerance can vary, so product quality, intended use, and personal sensitivity should still be considered.
Can jojoba be used as an essential-oil carrier?
Yes. Jojoba can serve as the carrier phase in topical essential-oil blends. The essential oils still need to be diluted appropriately for the intended application and user.
Does jojoba need a preservative?
Pure jojoba is an anhydrous ingredient and does not by itself provide the water microorganisms generally require for growth. That is different from saying every product containing jojoba is self-preserving. Once water or water-containing ingredients are introduced, preservation must be evaluated for the complete formulation.
