INCI: Sucrose
Plant-derived crystals that provide gentle physical exfoliation for smoother, softer-feeling skin.
What Is Sucrose?
Sucrose is the familiar form of sugar obtained from plant sources such as sugar cane and sugar beets. In body-care formulations, its crystalline structure makes it particularly useful as a physical exfoliant.
Rather than using acids or enzymes to loosen surface skin cells, a sugar scrub works mechanically as the crystals are gently massaged across the skin. The crystals gradually dissolve when exposed to water, creating an exfoliating experience that changes as the product is worked over the skin.
Benefits
Sugar provides physical exfoliation that helps remove accumulated dead surface skin cells and smooth areas that feel rough, dry, or uneven. Regular exfoliation can leave the skin feeling softer and create a more refined surface.
Physical exfoliation also helps prepare the skin for the botanical butters, oils, and other conditioning ingredients used within a complete body-care ritual.
How Does a Sugar Scrub Work?
Individual sugar crystals create gentle friction as they are massaged across damp skin. This mechanical action helps loosen accumulated surface skin cells and smooth rough-feeling texture.
The exfoliating experience is influenced by crystal size, the amount of pressure used during application, and the oils, butters, and other ingredients surrounding the sugar within the formulation.
Because Sucrose is water-soluble, the crystals gradually dissolve during rinsing rather than remaining on the skin as persistent exfoliating particles.
Sugar vs. Salt for Exfoliation
Sugar and salt can both provide effective physical exfoliation, but they create different body-care experiences.
Sugar crystals dissolve readily in water and are well suited to rich, conditioning body scrubs designed to combine exfoliation with botanical oils and butters. Salt also provides physical exfoliation but brings a distinctly mineral character that makes it especially appropriate for mineral-focused bathing and body-care rituals.
The choice between the two depends on the purpose of the formulation, desired texture, crystal characteristics, and overall sensory experience.
Sugar + Botanical Butters and Oils
Exfoliation is only one part of the experience in a well-formulated body scrub. Pairing Sucrose with rich emollients allows the formula to address both surface texture and skin conditioning within the same ritual.
As the sugar crystals provide physical exfoliation, botanical butters and oils help soften and condition the newly exposed skin surface. This combination creates a more complete body-care experience than exfoliation alone.
Why We Use Sugar
At Pure Intox, Sucrose serves as the primary physical exfoliant in Nourishing Shea Butter Sugar Scrub.
It is paired with Shea Butter and botanical emollients to create a treatment that combines effective surface exfoliation with rich conditioning. As the sugar helps smooth away rough-feeling surface buildup, the formula's lipid-rich ingredients leave the skin feeling soft, supple, and nourished.
Carnauba Wax provides additional structure and stability to the oil-rich formula, while Sucrose performs the scrub's primary exfoliating function. Each ingredient therefore has a distinct role within the finished product.
Sourcing & Quality
Sucrose used in cosmetic formulations is selected for purity, consistency, and appropriate crystal characteristics. Particle size is particularly important in a physical exfoliant because it influences the texture and intensity of the finished scrub.
We use Sucrose as part of a complete formulation in which the exfoliating crystals are balanced with conditioning ingredients to create a polished, comfortable body-care experience.
