Pool of Coconut Oil

INCI: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil

A traditional soapmaking oil valued for its cleansing properties, rich lather, and contribution to a firm, long-lasting bar.

What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut Oil is a botanical oil obtained from the kernel of the coconut, Cocos nucifera. Its distinctive fatty-acid composition gives it characteristics that make it particularly valuable in traditional handcrafted soap.

Unlike Fractionated Coconut Oil, which consists primarily of caprylic and capric triglycerides and remains liquid at room temperature, whole Coconut Oil retains a broader spectrum of naturally occurring fatty acids and is typically solid or semi-solid at cooler room temperatures.

Benefits

Coconut Oil is rich in fatty acids that contribute cleansing ability, lather, and structure when transformed through the soapmaking process. It helps create a satisfying wash experience while contributing to the firmness and performance of the finished bar.

When thoughtfully balanced with complementary botanical oils and butters, Coconut Oil becomes part of a complete soap formula designed to cleanse while maintaining a comfortable skin feel.

Fatty Acid Profile

Coconut Oil has a distinctive fatty-acid profile that includes substantial amounts of lauric acid along with myristic, caprylic, capric, palmitic, oleic, and other naturally occurring fatty acids.

This composition distinguishes Coconut Oil from many liquid botanical oils and helps explain its popularity in handcrafted soap formulations. Lauric and myristic acids in particular contribute to cleansing, lather, and bar hardness after saponification.

Why We Use Coconut Oil in Soap

In handcrafted soap, botanical oils are combined with an alkali through a process called saponification. During this process, the oils and alkali react to form soap and naturally occurring glycerin.

Coconut Oil is especially useful in this process because its fatty-acid composition contributes cleansing performance, abundant lather, and a firmer finished bar.

At Pure Intox, Coconut Oil is used as part of a balanced botanical oil system rather than as the sole foundation of the soap. Combining oils with different fatty-acid profiles allows us to create bars with complementary cleansing, conditioning, lather, and sensory characteristics.

Coconut Oil vs. Fractionated Coconut Oil

Whole Coconut Oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil are related, but they are not the same cosmetic ingredient.

Whole Coconut Oil is identified as Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil and contains the broader fatty-acid profile naturally associated with coconut oil. Fractionated Coconut Oil, used elsewhere in Pure Intox formulations, is identified as Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and is valued for its lightweight texture, fluidity, and oxidative stability.

We select each ingredient according to the needs of the individual formulation rather than treating the two as interchangeable.

Sourcing & Quality

Coconut Oil is obtained from Cocos nucifera and selected for quality, consistency, and suitability for handcrafted soapmaking.

In our botanical soap formulations, the oil is evaluated as part of the complete fatty-acid profile of the recipe, where its characteristics complement the other plant oils and butters used in the finished bar.
